The Shaw Fund for Mariners’ Children is a private foundation dedicated to supporting  New England fisherman. Established in 1853 with a bequest of Robert Gould Shaw, a successful Gloucester merchant, the Shaw Fund has been providing financial assistance and resource referral information to fishing families residing in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire for over 150 years.

The fund provides short term financial assistance to fishermen and their families when illness or injury leaves them unable to work.  The fund further assists retired fishermen and widows of fishermen who are facing financial difficulties. Financial assistance is also made available to dependent children of fishermen. Shaw Fund social workers provide information about and referrals to government and community agencies for additional support.

The Shaw Fund accepts referrals directly from members of the fishing community and from community service providers. Proof of a substantial work history in the fishing industry, as well as financial need is required to be considered  for assistance. The fund’s social workers assist applicants with establishing required documentation.
